Brought to you by Bartlett United Methodist Church. The mural is a labor of love for our community and we hope everyone will come visit our church and get their photo with our wings. There is an “adult” set of wings and a “kids” set of wings so everyone can join in on the fun. The inspiration for this mural is found in Psalms: “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge…” Psalm 91:4. Our address is 5676 Stage Road, and the mural is on the side wall of our Life Enrichment Center, facing the front of Bartlett High School. It is lit at night so come by anytime!

About the artist:
Craig Thompson has been a Bartlett resident for almost 40 years, and born and raised in Memphis. He and his family were members here at BUMC for over 25 years, and as members helped get the building built that the mural is now painted on. For over 30 years, he has owned a graphic design firm tailored to nonprofit organizations called Disciple Design. This is his second mural, the first being at yet another Methodist church, the former Grimes United Methodist Church on Summer Avenue. That mural stood for 38 years and became a Memphis icon. The church, and the mural along with it, was torn down in 2019. Craig, along with being a graphic designer, began chalk drawings for his neighborhood during the pandemic to encourage and bring joy, and also later on to address social issues. They grew larger and larger in size, preparing him for his next mural project with us.

How was it done?
The mural was created, after months of planning and preparation, with a combination of spray and brush over the course of 12 straight days in October, 2022. Here is a time lapse video of the process.
